A worked example

How many consonants? island

the answer is 4. Here A, E, I, O and U are vowels.

Exclude the five defined vowel letters

Count every letter except A, E, I, O and U. Under this game rule Y belongs to the remaining letters, regardless of its sound in a particular word. You can check your answer by adding your consonant count to the vowel count and comparing with the word length.

A useful way to practice

These activities use English words and spelling. Language familiarity affects performance, so a score is not a general intelligence measure. Read the full instruction: spelling, meaning and letter order are different tasks.

What your result means

This is a recreational words activity. Results describe performance on this particular task, with this device and these rules. They are not a clinical assessment, IQ score or promise of improvements in daily life. Your best result and recent sessions stay in this browser; no account is required.

Is Consonant Count free?

Yes. You can play the full activity without a payment, download or account.

Can I use a keyboard?

Use Tab to focus buttons and Enter or Space to activate them. Answer fields accept normal typing. The maze also supports arrow keys. Timed tests will differ between touch, mouse and keyboard input.

Why did my result change?

Practice, a different generated puzzle, distractions and input timing all affect results. Compare several sessions rather than drawing a conclusion from one attempt.
